I received first contender for my thesis subject today, seems to be pretty challenging but not too hard (in the meaning that it can be done). Of course studying at the ICT field my thesis is going to be some kind of system development case. So this first proposition looks like it has to have some kind of Excel export feature among other things. Now, I did some research and (of couse as the XLS is Microsoft proprietary format, tools to produce exports are rather limited) it looks like once again couple of Apache projects are needed to solve that problem.

Best way for my knowledge is to use Excel to produce templates having all the needed formatting, formulas, etc.. and then in combination of Apache POI and jXls produce wanted exports. Only thing that is needed is to put some tags to that XLS template for jXls to be able to insert data to correct locations. This is if the exports are going to be about same in every case.

Other not so good way is to output HTML table and set MIME code to MS-Excel, this way we could make whatever Excel sheets but formatting would be somewhat limited to fonts and colours + Excel exports done that way look like shit anyways. I think we would go with the former if the exports are going to be standard. But nothing is confirmed yet, it's just that this task seems to be less on the trivial side and more on the usefull side.

On the other side a.k.a other stuff, tomorrow: work, again I am pulling way more hours than my contract *mentalnote to self* ask for more salary and clarification to real working hours. At the evening I have this Linux course, rather ok. On the music side, nothing much to report, down tuned my guitar to drop-C and it sucks. Have to tune it back to D-tune, drop-C makes everything to sound like crap mallcore, yuck!

Uploaded first version in a month just now, implemented lightweight tracking functions. To get count on visits and what posts are read. Nothing major yet, just groundworks to get some usefull data for this feature. Yeah and now, of to school!

*Update*

Now the stats gathering stuff is completely in place, all stats are collected so that no users can be identified from those and no IP addresses are stored. Just views in term of numbers. Maybe some day I'll make a algorithm to store unique hashes of users visiting (in manner that no private data is collected) to identify returning "customers" etc but I'm not that interested in it right now.

*Update 2*

Live preview:

This morning started out nicely, cup of hot coffee and days paper. After finishing first cup, it was time to browse news sites for up-to-date information. Then I came across this, I mean what the hell? Did this nation just turn to some totalitarian dictatorship where everything is censored and pre checked before publification? If this would become true it would be fucking disaster. Type one wrong word into your site and *puff* your site has been denied acccess to by some "Secret" filtering algorithms and we all know how well those work out, correct...David, they don't.

Do we have to shield everyone from the cruelties of the world? No, do state have to posses the means to decide what the citizens are able to watch, hear and experience, NO! Each unto his / her own, decisions like that sound more Chinese than european, goddamnit, I have too much anger right now to even type any meaningful blog post! RRAAAAGH!

I've been away for sometime now, not that I'd have been really away like in Australia. I just had shitloads of work to do and little interest to blog about that. Well anyways It all boiled down to last friday. The deadline for our project, the project itself were not the hardest but definately not a easy breezer either. Thanks to our team we managed to pull it off, pull it off in a schedule and probably in a budget too. Customer was happy, we were happy, so joy joy.

Of course other things have an effect to another things and now my school is pretty much fucked up, I have loads of catching up to do. Therefore I am taking next week off from work in order to catch those other things... other thing being the school. Yawn. I just want to get it done, fast to be able to really concentrate on proper work things.

But before that It's Civ 4: BTS night with my good friends Grelbar and Jenny, also take a look at our ASMCREW site.
